Every year new words are added and old words are deleted from dictionaries. Words that seem to be irrelevant are eliminated and forgotten. Dictionaries can be seen as a reflection of our present time. But who decides on adding or deleting words?

 

This question can also be raised concerning our ‘new universal language’ that most of us use every single day to communicate with; emoji.

 

For the work Lost in Translation Sanne Vaassen used the ashes of burnt dictionaries to mimic the new emoji’s of 2020.
